About the Role The Automation Engineer will join a world-class team of scientists and engineers working at the intersection of AI and materials research. The role involves building an autonomous lab to accelerate materials discovery by integrating instruments, robots, and data systems. Responsibilities include turning scientific workflows into software and integrations, designing data models, connecting instruments and automation to lab information systems, and ensuring smooth, safe, and reliable operation. Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with bench scientists to translate experiments and workflows into integration specs and data models.
  • Work with integrators to design and build automated workcells for materials R&D.
  • Build and maintain services connecting instruments and robots to lab information systems.
  • Develop instrument drivers automating lab workflows via command sequences and vendor APIs/SDKs.
  • Collaborate with AI and data scientists to integrate the autonomous lab with AI models for experiment analysis and planning.

Qualifications

  • BS in EE/CS/ME/Controls or equivalent.
  • 5+ years in lab automation, integration, or industrial automation software.
  • Hands-on experience with robotic lab automation systems.
  • Strong scripting/programming skills (Python preferred).
  • Familiarity with APIs, databases, enterprise software integration.
  • Experience with information management/execution systems like LIMS or MES.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with containers, CI/CD, Git-based workflows.
  • Background in lab informatics or scientific data management.
  • Recognized accomplishments in the field.
