Description
- Senior HR leader for distributed team across US and Canada.
- Responsible for building, developing, retaining high-performing teams aligned with mission and values.
- Strategic and hands-on role covering total rewards, performance management, talent development, succession planning, HR operations.
- Ensures compliance with employment legislation in both countries.
- Reports directly to CEO; trusted advisor to leadership using data and HR metrics for strategic decisions.
- Preference for candidates based in Montreal area; remote work allowed.
Responsibilities:
Total Rewards
- Design/manage competitive compensation and benefits programs (US & Canada).
- Conduct compensation benchmarking studies.
- Oversee equity compensation programs via Carta.
- Manage benefits programs (medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, RRSP/401(k) matching).
- Partner with Finance on total compensation budget.
Performance Management
- Build/lead performance management framework supporting growth/accountability/results.
- Design performance review cycles, goal-setting (OKR/MBO), feedback mechanisms.
- Use ADP and HRIS tools for performance workflows and reporting.
- Partner with managers on performance issues and promotion decisions.
Talent Management & Career Development
- Develop talent acquisition, onboarding, retention, internal mobility strategies (US & Canada).
- Build career pathing frameworks and development programs.
- Design learning/development initiatives including leadership programs.
- Conduct talent assessments and stay/exit interview analysis.
- Manage employee lifecycle using ADP.
Succession Planning
- Lead succession planning for key roles ensuring business continuity.
- Partner with CEO/senior leadership on high-potential employees development plans.
- Maintain succession readiness map using talent reviews/performance data.
- Identify capability gaps; recommend hiring/development/restructuring strategies.
HR Operations & Compliance (US & Canada)
- Oversee HR operations ensuring compliance with federal/provincial/state/local laws including Quebec labor law.
- Administer ADP HRIS platform for payroll/data/compliance reporting.
- Create/enforce HR policies/handbooks/SOPs for both geographies.
- Manage full employee lifecycle with equitable/legal compliance practices.
- Partner with legal counsel/Finance on cross-border employment matters.
HR Metrics & Executive Reporting
- Define/track/present key HR metrics/KPIs regularly to Leadership (headcount, attrition, engagement scores etc.).
- Build/maintain HR dashboards translating data into strategic insights.
- Use data from ADP/Carta to identify trends/risks/recommendations.
Strategic HR Leadership
- Trusted advisor to CEO/senior leadership on people matters including organizational design/headcount planning/culture/change management.
- Lead People & Culture team through growth/transformation fostering high-performance culture.
- Partner with Finance on People & Culture budget management.
- Stay current on HR trends/best practices/regulatory changes in North America.
Skills / Qualifications Required:
- 10+ years progressive HR experience including 5+ years leadership role across Canada and US.
- Proven ability to develop/execute HR strategies aligned to business goals including change management/workforce planning/talent development/engagement.
- Hands-on experience in recruitment/onboarding/performance management/compliance/HRIS implementation.
- Strong track record managing compensation/benefits/budgets/HR metrics/KPIs.
- Strong understanding of relevant employment laws in Canada and US (Quebec preferred).
- Expertise in employee relations/coaching/culture-building/diversity/equity/inclusion commitment.
- Experience leading/mentoring HR teams through growth/change.
- Fluently bilingual English/French essential for communication across Canada and US teams.
- Willingness to travel quarterly to Montreal if not living there.
Skills / Qualifications Preferred:
- Experience at startups or VC funded companies.
- Experience managing large non-exempt hourly workforce.
- Human Resources Professional Certification (e.g., CRHA).
- Experience with ADP, Slack, Notion, Carta, MS Office and Google Suite.
