About the role

About Checkr Checkr is building the data platform to power safe and fair decisions. Established in 2014, Checkr’s innovative technology and robust data platform help customers assess risk and ensure safety and compliance to build trusted workplaces and communities. Checkr has over 100,000 customers including DoorDash, Coinbase, Lyft, Instacart, and Airtable. We’re a team that thrives on solving complex problems with innovative solutions that advance our mission. Checkr is recognized on Forbes Cloud 100 2025 List and is a Y Combinator 2024 Breakthrough Company. About the Role The MVR team builds the systems behind driver record checks — one of Checkr’s highest-volume screening products, relied on by transportation, gig economy, and logistics companies to make fast, confident hiring decisions for millions of candidates each year. The portfolio spans standard MVR, Continuous MVR (ongoing driver monitoring), Commercial MVR, and DOT compliance tools including CDLIS and the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, covering all 51 DMV jurisdictions across the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada. As Engineering Manager for MVR, you’ll own a product surface where the work is felt directly: improving the stability and speed of a screening product candidates move through every day, and expanding Continuous MVR and commercial capabilities that give customers greater confidence in their driver hiring programs.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and develop the MVR engineering team — setting technical direction, driving performance conversations, and building the hiring pipeline to grow and strengthen the team
  • Own the reliability and accuracy of MVR’s supply chain across 51+ jurisdictions — a complex integration environment where each DMV has unique failure modes, data formats, and uptime characteristics
  • Drive improvements in observability, reliability, and system resiliency to minimize customer impact when issues emerge
  • Partner with Product to define and execute the MVR roadmap, including Continuous MVR and Commercial MVR capabilities that serve Checkr’s enterprise and transportation accounts
  • Drive technical strategy for a complex third-party integration landscape — balancing near-term reliability improvements with longer-term architecture investments that scale coverage and reduce operational toil
  • Lead the team’s adoption of AI-assisted development practices — helping engineers move faster while maintaining the quality guardrails that a regulated, safety-critical product requires
  • Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Operations to navigate DOT regulatory requirements and ensure data accuracy across all jurisdictions
  • Represent MVR in cross-functional planning — acting as the engineering voice on team capabilities, constraints, and roadmap tradeoffs with Product and Engineering leadership

What you bring

  • 4+ years as an engineering manager, with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams
  • 8+ years as a software engineer, with strong command of service architecture, distributed systems, and system design
  • Experience managing complex third-party integration environments — you’re comfortable owning reliability across systems you don’t fully control, and know how to structure teams and processes around that reality
  • A track record of improving operational metrics — reducing incident frequency, improving detection time, or shipping reliability improvements in high-stakes production environments
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development and agentic coding tools — you understand how to help your team adopt these responsibly and can reason about the tradeoffs between velocity and quality they introduce
  • Experience working on regulated products where data accuracy and legal compliance are non-negotiable
  • Strong incident management skills — you can lead both the technical response and the stakeholder communication when things go wrong
  • Ability to make prioritization decisions quickly, with a clear framework for balancing short-term reliability work against longer-term product investments
  • Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders — Product, Operations,Compliance, and senior leadership
  • A genuine investment in developing people — through career conversations, stretch assignments, and creating conditions for engineers to grow
  • Humility,openness to feedback,and eagerness to learn
  • An A-player mindset with a strong bias for action: you raise the bar, move with urgency, stay resilient through ambiguity, and take ownership to deliver meaningful outcomes

What you’ll get

  • A fast-pacedand collaborative environment
  • Learningand development allowance
  • Competitive compensationand opportunity for advancement
  • 100% medical,dental,and vision coverage
  • Up to $25K reimbursement for fertility, adoption, and parental planning services
