Role Overview
- Responsible for all aspects of optical fiber work including handling, splicing, testing, and integrating fibers into complex designs during assembly of the fusion machine.
- Ensure functional installation, health, and operation of fibers.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Collaborate closely with Operations, Engineering, Quality, and other departments.
- Work within a multi-disciplinary team of technicians and engineers.
- Shift: First shift (7:00 am to 3:00 pm) with possible overtime.
Responsibilities
- Handle, route, splice, test, and repair thousands of fibers throughout the SPARC fusion machine.
- Perform mechanical integration of small assemblies related to fiber work (e.g., passthrough flanges and enclosures).
- Install composite or polymer wrappings for fibers and enclosures.
- Train other technicians on installation, splicing, routing, and measurement procedures.
- Improve safety protocols for laser and fiber optic handling.
- Support manufacturing and R&D fiber needs.
Qualifications
Required
- 4+ years experience in fiber optics field applications.
- Experience with attenuation, insertion loss, spectral analysis measurements using equipment such as OTDR, OSA, OBR, power meter.
- Experience in fiber handling in a lab setting with known standards.
Bonus Points For
- 7+ years experience in fiber optics field applications.
- Experience with distributed sensing arrays.
- Experience with polyimide and various coated fibers.
- At least 1 year teaching/training fiber splicing techniques and cable assemblies.
- Experience designing/building/testing fiber cable assemblies in cryogen and vacuum conditions.
- Experience working in limited space or odd positions environments.
Skills
- Fiber coating removal and re-coating.
- Specialty fiber splicing.
- Fiber proof-testing.
- Measurement/analysis techniques with optical tools (interrogators, multiplexers, switches, fault locators).
- Knowledge of optics sensing techniques and optical attenuation/insertion loss mechanisms.
- Basic Materials Science knowledge.
- Good communication skills and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements & Work Conditions
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
- Activities include stooping, typing, standing or sitting for extended periods.
- May need to work in small confined spaces or odd locations; platforms up to 25 feet high.
- Dedication to safety around hazards such as heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, cryogenics.
- Willingness to travel or work nights/weekends/on-call occasionally.
