Your Team & Role

Todoist is a fully-remote company of about 100 people across more than 30 countries. We've been profitable and self-funded since 2007, and we've grown Todoist and Comms without outside investors. That shapes how we work: small teams, long time horizons, and a preference for clarity over process. This is our first in-house legal role. Today we work with outside counsel case by case, which serves us well for specialist matters but leaves the everyday questions — a customer contract, a privacy question, an employment question in a country we haven't hired in before — waiting longer than they should. You'll take full DRI ownership of legal at Todoist: bringing that work in-house, and shaping how we handle it from here. You'll report to our Head of Finance and collaborate with every function: Product and Engineering on privacy and data protection, People on employment questions across our distributed team, and Marketing on brand, content, and trademark. The work spans commercial contracts, employment, privacy and GDPR, IP,... litigation,... questions that cross jurisdictions —... you'll keep working with specialist external counsel where their depth earns its cost. A typical week might include reviewing... negotiating customer... vendor agreements,... answering questions... from teammates who need clear yes,... no,... or "here's tradeoff", updating policy that no longer reflects how we work,... choosing which specialist matters to route external counsel. Because we're remote asynchronous,... much your work will be written,... AI part how all work day day. About You

Substantial legal experience,... ideally including general counsel work global company,... licensed practice law least one U.S.... state (any state works). You live anywhere world but company legally registered U.S., so U.S.... license lets advise risks
Proven expertise least two legal domains,... ideally commercial alongside privacy litigation,... eager widen range us
Comfortable broad set matters: commercial contracts,... privacy data protection,... employment IP litigation; understand bring specialists
Working knowledge data protection regimes such GDPR applied consumer software products
Experience supporting tech SaaS companies; remote experience plus
Clear writing non-lawyers; advice read teammates without legal training
Comfortable sole lawyer owning complex matters end-end; enjoy building something ground up
Provide practical guidance helping teams understand tradeoffs rather listing risks
Comfortable collaborating across time zones cultures asynchronously
Excited use AI regularly work
