Machine Learning Engineer Intern - Job Description

The Team:
- Machine Learning is central to Upstart’s business model.
- Team includes research scientists, data scientists, and machine learning engineers.
- Work spans underwriting and pricing, fraud detection, performance marketing, loan servicing,
and fair lending/explainability. The Role:
- Build tools and production-grade code to improve models and accelerate researchers.
- Implement algorithmic improvements for predictive power, training efficiency,
or serving latency.
- Design reliable data/feature pipelines.
- Automate workflows to reduce time from research to deployment and monitoring.
- Receive mentorship from experienced ML practitioners.
- Collaborate closely with ML scientists on real-world engineering problems.
How You’ll Make an Impact:
- Deliver projects improving model performance,
efficiency, latency or reliability.
- Write tested,
reviewed, scalable Python production code.
- Communicate findings clearly to align stakeholders and drive next steps.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Strong academic credentials with ongoing bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science,
physics, machine learning, or other quantitative fields.
- On track to graduate by summer 2027 (internship not open to first/second-year undergraduates).
- Programming skills in Python.
- Proficiency in machine learning,
numerical computing, software engineering fundamentals; foundations in probability and statistics.
- Intellectual curiosity,
humility, drive, teammwork, and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD studies or post-doctoral research in relevant quantitative fields (PhD students must be on track to graduate by summer 2027).
- Experience building models and conducting statistical/quantitative research.
- Experience building ML tooling or solving real-world ML engineering problems in industry (e.g., data pipelines,
evaluation frameworks). Position Location: Remote Travel Requirements: Majority of work can be done remotely within US or Canada (outside Quebec). Expected to spend quality time in-person for regular onsites/meetings once or twice per quarter. Compensation & Benefits Summary: Anticipated base salary range: $141000—$150000 USD (varies by location). Target bonuses, equity compensation.
