Physicist – Quantum Networking

Location: Bothell, Washington, United States IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution. We are looking for a Physicist with expertise in trapped-ion quantum computing. As a Physicist in the Engineering and Technology department of IonQ, you’ll be part of an interdisciplinary team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. In this role, you’ll lead the system design, integration, and performance characterization of IonQ’s next-generation trapped-ion quantum computers and the associated quantum networking infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the subsystem development and integration by collaborating with the engineering and software teams.
  • Measure and analyze data on the performance of a trapped ion quantum computer.
  • Develop architectures to interconnect quantum computers using photonic links.
  • Mentor physicists and engineers in taking assembled hardware from the initial stages of ion trapping to coherent gate operations.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • PhD in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics with expertise in quantum computing with trapped ions or neutral atoms.
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications in journals.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • Expertise in quantum networking using trapped-ion quantum computers.
  • 3+ years post-PhD experience working in industry or national labs.
  • Proficient in developing RF trap waveforms for coherent shuttling of ions.
  • Engineering or systems engineering experience in transforming a complex physical system into a product.

Salary Information

The approximate base salary range for this position is $96,876 - $126,836. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, and equity. Compensation will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Beyond base salary, total compensation includes a variable bonus and equity component and a range of benefit options found on our career site at ionq.co/jobs.
