What Product Management is like at Gusto:
- We’re looking for high-autonomy, entrepreneurial Product Managers to come build high-impact solutions for small businesses and their employees. We believe in high-ownership Product Managers who operate like business owners - owning an entire roadmap end to end, and shaping the product from strategy setting through the nitty gritty execution details.

About the Team: Tax is a critical pillar of Gusto’s platform. The Tax Platform team owns the core systems that determine how tax liabilities are calculated, tracked, paid, reconciled,and filed for more than 400 ,000 small businesses . These systems sit at the intersection of money movement ,regulatory compliance ,and customer trust .The Tax Platform provides shared capabilities used across Tax ,Compliance ,and R&D ,shaping how tax data flows through the company and how other teams build safely on top of Gusto’s tax foundation . This is high-leverage ,system-level work .The team is actively modernizing tightly coupled legacy systems ,improving correctnessand traceability ,and creating durable platform capabilities that reduce riskand unlock faster product development acrossthe company .We partner closely with Engineering ,Compliance ,Legal ,CX ,Data Science ,and Operations to ensure Gusto’s tax platform remains accurate ,scalable ,and resilient as the business grows . Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
- Ownership: Own thestrategy ,roadmap,and execution for foundational Tax Platform systems ,with responsibility for shaping platform direction across multiple quartersand years .
- North Star: Defineandevolve a clear Tax Platform strategy that ladders intoGusto’s broaderTax strategy ,bringing clarity to ambiguous problem spacesand guiding day-to-day decisions around prioritization ,sequencing,and tradeoffs .
- Collaborate & Evangelize: Partner closely with Engineering ,Compliance ,Legal ,CX ,Data Science,and Product teams to align priorities ,unblock dependencies,and drive adoption of shared platform capabilities .Translate between platform workand customerand business outcomes to help engineering teams understand impactand help stakeholders understandthe valueand tradeoffs of platform investments .
- Customer Impact: Tie platform initiatives to customer outcomes by using data ,domain expertise,and partner input to prioritize work that improves accuracy,timeliness,trust,and operational reliability .
- Execution Excellence: Advocate for durable,corr ect,and scalable solutions while maintaining momentum through incremental delivery,t houghtful sequencing,and clear success metrics .
Here’s what we're looking for: -8+ years of product management experience,includ ing meaningful ownership of platform teams,strategy,and multi-year initiatives that created leverage across multiple teams or product areas . -Demonstrated success operating in complex,multi-product environments with cross-team dependenciesand internal platform customers . -Strong system-level thinkingand product judgment ,withthe abilityto navigate ambiguity ,make hard tradeoffs,and drive clarity without relying on consensus . -Experience evolving or modernizing critical systems over time,b alancing short-term delivery with long-term platform healthand risk reduction . -Comfort working in regulated or compliance-sensitive domains such as payroll tax ,fintech ,HR ,or legal tech ,with a deep appreciationfor accuracy,auditability,and customer trust . -Proven abilityto partner closely with engineering teamsand translate between platform decisions,c ustomer impact,and business outcomes . -A strong POV on building products in the age of AI ; experience building AI-driven features is a big bonus If you don't think you meet all ofthe criteria above but still are interestedin the job,you must apply.Nobody checks every box,and we're lookingfor someone excitedto jointhe team.
