The Opportunity:

As a Release Engineer, you will play a key role in building, maintaining, and evolving the automation systems that power Thunderbird’s software releases across desktop and mobile platforms (Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, iOS). You will join the Release Operations team responsible for reliable, reproducible, secure builds delivered on time to millions worldwide. Collaboration with the broader Mozilla ecosystem is key to adapt Firefox upstream build system changes into Thunderbird’s release pipeline.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop and maintain workflows for automating software builds and releases, including managing dependencies and toolchains.
  • Write and enhance CI/CD workflows, packaging, and installation scripts for Thunderbird on Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.
  • Adapt build script changes from Firefox engineering teams to Thunderbird.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex build, test, and dependency issues collaboratively.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives; evaluate/design alternative solutions; support ad hoc projects.
  • Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of Thunderbird releases.
  • Engage with the open-source community to gather feedback, address concerns, and foster collaboration.

What you’ll bring:

  • 3+ years professional experience in build and release engineering for Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, iOS applications.
  • Proficiency in C, C++, Rust, Kotlin, Java including knowledge of related toolchains/dependencies.
  • Strong understanding of Python and shell scripting for automation, version control & CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience building/compiling native desktop or mobile applications; ability to debug complex build/compile issues.
  • Working knowledge of containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), distributed version control systems (Mercurial/Git), DevOps principles & cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP).
  • Strong ownership of tasks; ability to manage multiple requests independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent English written/verbal communication skills; able to engage clearly with international distributed teams.
  • Commitment to open-source development & open standards; proven ability to complete projects independently on time with high quality.

Bonus points for:

  • Familiarity with JavaScript and CSS for front-end support/integration.
  • Experience with Taskcluster or similar CI systems.
  • Low-level system experience with Linux, Windows or macOS.
  • Familiarity with legacy build systems (Make) and modern systems (Bazel/Buck/Blaze).
  • Previous experience contributing to open-source projects or engaging open-source communities.

Work Environment:

Work remotely with passionate staff and open-source community members globally. Strong communication/documentation skills are essential.

What you’ll get:

Salary ranges:

  • US: $103,000 - $122,000 USD
  • Canada: $93,000 - $106,000 CAD

Title/level/compensation determined by qualifications & experience. Candidates with strong skills but less experience may be considered. Work & Career benefits:
