Role Overview

  • Engineering leader for product development team focused on leveraging AI.
  • Support existing core payroll products and advance AI incorporation throughout product portfolio and SDLC.
  • Lead transformation of shared services groups like DevOps and Quality Assurance into strategic partners.
  • Champion innovative features using machine learning and generative AI.
  • Drive company growth with AI as a fundamental product differentiator.

Responsibilities

  • Align teams on AI-native features and business goals.
  • Own vision for platform and product in partnership with product managers and stakeholders.
  • Initiate innovation to inspire teams.
  • Elevate engineering practices to be AI-native; adopt AI tools/processes to improve velocity, code quality, operational efficiency.
  • Prioritize deliverables aligned with company needs; collaborate across leadership.
  • Ensure products/services are performant, available 24x7x365, resilient, stable.
  • Transform shared services groups (DevOps, QA) into strategic partners supporting engineers actively.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies including SaaS systems; act as technical consultant championing solutions.
  • Collaborate with engineering leaders company-wide on subsystem design and platform architecture improvements.

Qualifications

  • Master's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years engineering leadership managing people and tech stacks.
  • Proven ability to lead organizational change focusing on DevOps and Quality Assurance transformation from cost centers to strategic engineering parts.
  • Prior experience or exposure in AI-native product development leveraging AWS services (Bedrock, Agent Core, etc).
  • Strong communication skills across technical and business stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ownership of problems/projects through completion.
  • Ability to debug/triage critical systems including team performance issues.
  • Hands-on experience with agile methodologies applied functionally.
  • Strong experience with web application development, DevOps, distributed systems, CI/CD, quality test automation.
  • Solid knowledge of Object-Oriented Design, Service Oriented Architecture, Systems thinking.
  • Good verbal/written presentation skills for all organizational levels.

Compensation

Target cash compensation: $189,000 - $237,000 per year (Scottsdale & most major metro locations). Final offer depends on experience/expertise.

Work Location Expectations

Gusto offices in Denver, San Francisco (including San Jose metro), New York City; Symmetry office in Scottsdale. Hybrid work model with 2–3 days/week onsite expected. Secure reliable internet required when working remotely.
