About the role:
Samsara is the industry leader in AI for physical operations. They are hiring a founding Machine Learning Engineer to join a growing Product ML organization. This role involves hands-on ML systems work with product impact1 designing and shipping customer-facing ML features like anomaly detection, crash-risk scoring, predictive maintenance using multimodal vehicle and telematics data. Responsibilities include owning architectural decisions (online serving, streaming/batch pipelines, features & infrastructure tradeoffs) and partnering closely with applied scientists to turn models into actionable products. Compensation bands are flexible for strong candidates. This role offers an opportunity to shape the MLE function and grow a team. In this role, you will:
- Founding impact & scope: Be the first dedicated MLE in product-ML org; influence architecture; launch production ML products; define MLE partnership with applied scientists across ~30 people data organization.
- High-value real-world domain: Work on customer-facing systems such as crash risk, anomaly detection, predictive maintenance using GPS/IMU/telemetry data, fleet video, maintenance logs1 models that reduce risk and save lives/costs.
- Systems + product blend: Handle ML infrastructure (feature design, online serving, batch & streaming pipelines) plus product ownershipend-to-end decisions/tradeoffs.
- Room to grow & experiment: Encouraged prototyping including GenAI/CV layers; role can be shaped for modeling ownership or team expansion for senior candidates.
Minimum requirements for the role:
- 5+ years experience as Machine Learning Engineer, Applied Scientist or similar.
- BS or MS in Computer Science or another quantitative field.
- Strong proficiency in one or more common languages (e.g., Python, Java, C++, Golang).
- Proficiency with common ML tools/frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Spark).
- Working understanding of algorithms you will implement.
- Proven experience with end-to-end ML application development.
An ideal candidate also has:
- Experience leading small cross-functional teams delivering new ML experiences.
- Experience building zero-to-one ML applications.
Samsaras Compensation Philosophy:
Compensation includes base salary + bonus/variable + restricted stock unit awards (RSUs). New hire RSU awards may be granted at hire time; annual RSU refresh grants possible. Top performers may receive above-market equity refresh awards. Salary range for this position: $135,481 1 $227,700 USD annually (base salary). Actual pay varies by city of residence, knowledge, skills and experience.
