Staff Quantum Applications Scientist – Optimization

Göteborg, Västra Götaland, Sweden IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution. We’re looking for a Staff Quantum Applications Scientist - Optimization who will be part of a cross-functional team at IonQ whose mission is to deliver the world’s best quantum solutions, on the world’s best quantum computers, to solve the world’s most complex and impactful problems. You will be part of the new Quantum Applications team based in Gothenburg, Sweden and will work closely with the Swedish innovation ecosystem (and beyond!) to create new hybrid quantum applications with significant commercial impact. Responsibilities:

  • Originate and lead development of impactful hybrid quantum algorithms and applications for optimization, which promise commercial advantages over classical methods.
  • Collaborate with quantum compiler, cloud and system engineering teams to develop highly optimized hybrid workflows for trapped-ion quantum computers.
  • Contribute knowledge of optimization algorithms and tools (classical and quantum) to evaluate and communicate pros and cons, current state-of-the-art, scaling behavior, trade offs, cross-over points, etc. Convert these analyses into actionable strategies for improving the efficiency of the quantum methods and algorithms.
  • Lead constructive technical interactions with client teams to find, define, and solve problems of real-world interest using IonQ trapped-ion quantum computers.
  • Represent the team in client and stakeholder presentations, develop presentation content and appropriately adapt it to the audience.
  • Build reusable software platforms to grow IonQ’s user base. Integrate first of a kind quantum algorithms into larger end-to-end workflows.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • Doctorate degree in Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another STEM domain, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5 years of professional work experience solving problems in transportation, supply chain, logistics, network optimization, smart grids or similar, in collaboration with subject matter experts
  • Hands-on expertise developing new algorithms and software tools for optimization, operations research, supply chain, logistics, etc. including peer-reviewed manuscripts, contributions to code bases, a portfolio of clients.
  • Expertise in key mathematical techniques used in quantum computing - linear algebra, matrix decompositions, probability theory, symmetry, computational complexity.
  • Desire to work closely with customers including aligning with time zones and work schedules. Potential for international travel and/or onsite co-location.

You’d be a great fit with:
