Job Description

Position: Welder - Contract Location: Somerville, MA Department: Corporate Operations – Operations - Manufacturing Employment Type: Contract (6 month term) Work Arrangement: On-site Rate of Pay: $30 - $41 per hour About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Role Summary:

  • Perform manufacturing in-house welding work for cutting edge high-field superconducting magnets.

Responsibilities:

  • Weld and inspect large metallic structures and tooling within timelines and budgets.
  • Set up welding processes per specifications, selecting correct equipment and methods.
  • Read and analyze drawings; take detailed measurements for project layout planning.
  • Cut and join material.
  • Perform hand welding or semi-automated welding; use advanced welding forms as needed. Weld in vertical, flat, overhead positions.
  • Provide manufacturability feedback to design engineers regarding weld geometries and material selection.
  • Perform welding equipment qualification trials.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing discrepancies focusing on continuous improvement.
  • Follow safety procedures at all times.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Documented training or certification in most of the following: Blueprint Reading and Fabrication, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).
  • 5+ years experience as a welder on large structural systems and tooling.
  • Experience with large metallic structures and related welding manufacturing processes.
  • Experience producing welds meeting industry standard requirements.
  • Experience welding stainless steel and using GTAW process to weld copper.

Bonus Points for:

  • Experience in pressure vessel, aerospace, nuclear welding applications.
  • Experience with GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, Electron Beam, Laser Welding.
  • Operating mechanized or automated welding equipment.
  • Ability to read/interpret technical drawings/documentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail; knowledge of various welding equipment/procedures; ability to work unsupervised; understanding of mathematical/numerical data/calculations; project/time management skills.

Must-Have Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Ability to stoop, type, stand, sit for extended periods.

Safety & Other Requirements:

  • Dedication to safety mitigating hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, cryogenics.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally or work nights/weekends/on-call as required.
